The Historic Grand Estate did not start out as you see it today, however, its beginnings are something to talk about and remember.
In its original state, it was built as a home in 1902 and given as a wedding gift from a father to his daughter.
The Honorable Thomas Duncombe Dee first had 806 Washington Blvd built in 1889, eighteen years after his marriage to Miss Annie Taylor; the daughter of John Taylor, the third prophet of the Mormon Church, on April 10, 1871. The marriage occurred just a few months after the letter he had sent to John Taylor written January 15, 1871 asking for Annie’s hand in marriage.
Within nine days, a letter was written dated January 24, 1871 from John Taylor granting his permission of the union. After the birth of one son and three daughters they out grew their first home and decided to move out to the county, where 806 Washington became their final home and the birth of three more children. Upon the placket located on the front of the home it reads, “Constructed in 1889, this two story masonry structure with a granite block foundation embodies the distinct visible characteristics of the Queen Anne architectural style.
In addition to the building's architectural significance, it is associated in a significant way with the life of a person important in the history of Ogden - Thomas Dee. Thomas Dee is remembered because of his many and varied business and civic interests. He was known as the father of the Ogden public school system, serving as either president or school board member for 35 years. His contribution spanned the time period between the early 1860's until his death in 1905. He is best remembered for the Thomas Dee Memorial Hospital, a major portion of which was funded in his name by his family after his death.” (Ogden City Register for Historic Resources Ogden City Land Mark)
The home in which his family and wife lived has stayed virtually unchanged, but the home that was built for his eldest daughter Annie Maude Dee Porter, now known as the Historic Grand Estate has seen different changes over the years. It was renovated back in 1985 and additions made to create a reception center. The Chandelier room was added in 1998, where the original window and stairs that led outside are still in place. The original fireplace still stands and wooden floor that has been recently renovated in 2007 to help ensure its longevity. The Glass Room was added in 2002, which is completely surrounded in glass from ceiling to floor.
Walking from the parking lot you pass a beautiful rock fireplace that gives you your first glimpse into its history. Even Dee himself was a Justice of the Piece and performed weddings. His first recorded marriage on October 18, 1883 and his last on August 28, 1890; a total of 179 marriages performed.
From the beginning as a wedding gift to now a wedding reception and event center, the Historic Grand Estate is rich with tradition and heritage that continues to live on today. We invite you to come and experience a piece of the past that we have to share with you on the day of your new future together.
